The U16 men and women`s team have qualified for the 8th edition of the FIBA U16 African Championship scheduled for next month in Tunisia following their impressive outing at the qualifiers in Ghana.

Our girls won both games against Ghana convincingly with the first game finishing 73-24 and the second 65-17. Nigeria and Ghana are the only two teams that participated in the women`s qualifiers in the zone. 

In the male qualifiers, our boys won their game against Cote D`Ivoire 67-38 and narrowly lost to the host country, Ghana, 45-47.


The teams will take lessons from the qualifiers and improve their game ahead of the championship as their real test lies ahead when they play against teams like Mali, Angola, Tunisia, and Egypt.

Nigeria`s women team won the silver in 2015 while the men won bronze in 2019. Both teams will look replicate this podium success in 2023.

The championship with hold in Monastir from 13-23 July, and will serve as a qualifier for the 2024 FIBA U17 World Championships. The winner and the runners-up will punch their tickets for next year’s World Cup.
